What is a Certificate of conformity?

If you’re thinking of taking your car abroad for a long period of time, or you need to register your car in another country, you may need to obtain a Certificate of Conformity, also known as a COC.

This is a document that shows that your vehicle (such as a car or motorbike) complies to the same standards of that car model in your new country. This document helps with the registration process and is usually required by the driving standards government body in your new country.

If you’re just taking your car to another country for a quick visit, you will not need a COC. A Certificate of conformity is only required when you wish to register your car in another country, or need to bring it to another country for a long period of time. The amount of time that you are allowed to use your car abroad without registering it varies from country to country.

The Certificate of Conformity Template

So what does a Certificate of Conformity look like? What is the correct certificate of conformity format?

The COC for vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, includes important technical information and data about the model of your car. It is unique, and has a special VIN number – a Vehicle Identification Number – which means that it applies specifically to your vehicle.

One of the most important values that must be included on a Certificate of Conformity template is the CO2 values and data related to the fuel type and emissions of your vehicle. This is important for taxation purposes in many EU countries.

Each COC may look slightly different from each manufacturer. A Certificate of Conformity example from BMW may look a little different from the COC certificate format that is produced for Volkswagen vehicles.

Note, vehicles and cars are not the only item that requires a certificate of conformity. Other goods may require a CE certificate of conformity, or display a ‘CE’ mark on their packaging. This mark serves the same purpose as the COC for vehicles. It ensures the item conforms to the same standards throughout the European Economic Area (EEA). This certificate is not the same as the COC for vehicles, however and EUROCOC can only help with the issuance of Certificates of Conformity for vehicles.

How to get a COC

If you need to get a COC for your vehicle, EUROCOC can help.

Usually, the Certificate of Conformity is issued by request when you purchase the car from the manufacturer. If you bought your car second-hand, from a dealer, or simply lost the original COC, you must apply for a duplicate COC.

The duplicate Certificate of conformity has the exact same COC template as the original, but is marked with a ‘duplicate’ stamp. It is as valid as the original and there are no material differences between the two.

Getting a duplicate COC can be a difficult and long-winded process. It usually takes months to receive the certificate from your vehicle’s manufacturer which causes difficulties when you want to register your vehicle quickly.

EUROCOC can provide you with a quick and simple solution. We obtain COC certificates directly from the manufacturer on your behalf, and we get them much faster than if you were to apply for one without our help. We deliver the COC right to your door.
