What is a COC for Portugal?

A Certificate of Conformity, also called a Certificado de Conformidade (CEE) in Portugal,  is a document required to register a car in Portugal that was manufactured in another country. If you’re looking to move to Portugal, or if you are visiting for a long period of time and want to take your vehicle with you, it is likely that you will need a Certificate of Conformity.

In EU Law, a COC (Certificate of Conformity) is required as a declaration of conformity with the type approval of the European Commission. In short, the Certificate of Conformity guarantees the homogeneity of goods in the EU that are subject to registration, including passenger vehicles (M1), light goods vehicles (N1), and motorcycles (L). EUROCOC can help you to get a COC for all of these vehicle types to assist you in your move to Portugal.

How to get a Certificate of Conformity in Portugal

When importing your vehicle into Portugal you should begin the process of registering your vehicle with the Portuguese Customs before your arrival in the country. Registration for vehicles is recorded at both the local customs office and the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes, IP (IMT.)

The IMT usually requires some or all of the following documentation to register your vehicle:

  • Certificate of conformity, COC (Certificado de Conformidade CEE)
  • A Certificate of Compliance (Form Model 9) issued by the IMT
  • A Homologacão certificate from certified representative in Portugal
  • A certificate of roadworthiness (IPO)
  • A copy of the foreign vehicle registration certificate

In some cases you will also need to pay a tax on your vehicle. You may not need to pay these taxes, or may be  eligible for a significant reduction in taxes needing to be paid if you can produce:

  • A certificate or tax clearance form issued by customs.
  • Original receipt of purchase of vehicle showing taxes paid in the country of purchase.
