In the Isle of Man, imported vehicles aged 3 years and above need to undergo a roadworthiness test before registration. The test is done at a vehicle test centre and you should be able to take it within two weeks after making an enquiry.

Only after successful testing and registration will your Isle of Man number plate be given to you.

If you intend to import a used or new car into the Isle of Man, you will learn every step necessary to successfully register the vehicle.

How Does The Isle of Man Car Registration System Work?

You can register your vehicle at any local post office in the Isle of Man. The process begins with filling out an MVR5 form provided by the Department of Infrastructure.

Here at the documents to take to the post office for first-time registrations:

  • Vehicle Registration Documents:

You will need the recent vehicle registration documents provided by the car’s manufacturer if the vehicle is new. Make sure to obtain your registration certificate (V5C) before going for registration, if the vehicle is from the UK.

  • Certificate of Motor Insurance:

This document is required for all vehicles to be driven on public roads after registration.

  • Roadworthiness Certificate:

You will be issued this certificate during the vehicle driving test if your car is more than 3 years old.

  • Customs Clearance Certificate (NOVA2MAN):

For new or used vehicles imported from outside the UK. You will get this from Customs and Excise after it is certified that you have cleared all the import charges.

  • Type Approval:

You need to include approval for your vehicle if it is under 10 years old and if it has no more than 8 seats (passenger vehicle).

A V55 document usually contains type approval information necessary for a vehicle’s registration and can also serve as a declaration of newness.

A European Certificate of Conformity is another acceptable means of evidence. This document certifies that your vehicle measures up to the road standards in the Isle of Man. EUROCOC can help you process yours in time for your vehicle’s registration.

All these documents must be presented or the registration process will be delayed since your particulars have to undergo inspection. In cases where the documents are incomplete, Vehicle Licensing located at the Vehicle and Driving Test Centre helps with vehicle registration.

Solid black, black and grey 3D effects characters appear on retro-reflective number plates, and ornamental characters are not acceptable. These characters have a standard size of 79mm x 50mm, with a 14mm stroke.

The plates may have the Manx flag with a triskelion symbol surrounded by a circle of 6 stars. The international code ‘GBM’ is also present and stands for Great Britain and Northern Ireland – (Isle of) Man.

The current format for an Isle of Man plate is ‘AMN-999-Y’. The components are an initial letter, followed by ‘MN’, up to 3 numbers, and a final single letter. This final letter says nothing about the vehicle’s age.

The words ‘Isle of Man’ are written in Celtic font above the license number. All letters can be used on Manx number plates except I, Q, S, and Z.

What Types Of Isle of Man License Plates Exist?

There is the Ellan Vannin type plate measuring 79mm x 44mm with 11.5mm stroke and plain plates which are 79mm high. Trade plates also appear slightly different.
