What is a COC?

A Certificate of Conformity is a document required to register a car in Germany that was made abroad. If you’re looking to move to Germany, or if you are visiting for a long period of time and want to take your car with you, it is likely that you will need a Certificate of Conformity for your vehicle.

In EU Law, a COC (Certificate of Conformity) is required as a declaration of conformity with the type approval of the European Commission. In short, the Certificate of Conformity guarantees the homogeneity of goods in the EU that are subject to registration, including passenger vehicles (M1), light goods vehicles (N1), and motorcycles (L). When do I need a Certificate of Conformity (COC) for Germany?

When you travel to Germany and want to bring your car for a long period of time, you will likely need to get a Certificate of Conformity (COC) in Germany. You will also have to register your vehicle with the German authorities and possibly pay a vehicle tax. More information on registering your vehicle in Germany can be found here.

In addition to your COC, you will also need to provide the German authorities with the following information on order to be able to register your vehicle:

  • Your German residence card (temporary, permanent, or blue card)
  • Your passport
  • Proof of car insurance
  • The registration certificate part II (Fahrzeugbrief)
  • A completed 032021 form.
  • Your license plates
